Players will now need to time their shots to sneak in between the blaster fire, or better yet deflect it back towards the fragile pig structure with a well-timed lightsaber. These moments aren’t just references for fans – they represent significant new wrinkles to the Angry Birds formula. Several stages feature a pig Darth Vader using the Force to float blocks or a pig Tusken Raider firing a blaster. The levels themselves display this same skillful combination of clever and cute Star Wars references with more complex and satisfying stage design. The trickiest stages require gamers to fling Han in one direction to nab one Storm Trooper pig, while aiming his blaster backwards to nab another.

Gamers will now need to aim their bird in just the right place and activate abilities correctly to succeed. This makes success feel more satisfying as a result. Defeating stages means carving out a perfect spot with Luke then sending in Obi-Wan behind to force-push a pile of blocks in just the right spot. Although these new skills aren’t major departures, they do make Angry Birds Star Wars’ roster of avian heroes much more action-oriented and fun to use. But Han Solo (complete with scruffy hair on his pointy yellow head) is probably most useful of all – he fires three pinpoint blaster rounds anywhere players tap. The reimagined Obi-Wan Kenobi bomb bird Force Pushes piles of blocks in the direction players tap. Now when you fling a red Luke Skywalker, you can tap the screen a second time to activate a lightsaber that surgically slices through the first few obstacles in your path. No longer is the red bird a generic roster-filler.

The Angry Bird heroes themselves have received fitting Star Wars makeovers, both in visual design (I’m especially fond of the giant furry Chewbacca bird) and in function.
